Peaches moving through a Clean Works treatment system without a water wash

Produce wash alternative

Clean Works reduces foodborne pathogens and spoilage organisms on fresh produce with a gas-phase treatment. There is no wash water to pump, recirculate, treat or discharge, and no residue left on the product.

Why go waterless

Wash water can spread what it is meant to remove.

Water-based washes rely on shared or recirculated water. One contaminated product can carry microorganisms into the water and on to the next.

Clean Works is completely waterless, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination associated with shared or recirculated wash water. In some applications, it has also demonstrated pathogen reduction that meets or exceeds traditional water-based methods.

No wash water
No process water required, and nothing to pump, recirculate, treat or discharge.
Residue-free
Hydroxyl radicals dissipate into water and oxygen. Nothing is left on the product.
Fast
In many applications, treatment occurs in 30 seconds or less.
Third-party validated
More than 200 third-party validation studies across products, microorganisms and surfaces.

How it works

How Clean Works treats produce without water.

Hydrogen peroxide, UV-C light and ozone combine to generate hydroxyl radicals that attack microorganisms on contact, then dissipate into water and oxygen.

Activate

UV-C light activates ozone and hydrogen peroxide inside the treatment chamber.

Generate

Highly reactive hydroxyl radicals are generated throughout the treatment environment.

Destroy

The radicals attack microorganisms on exposed surfaces, damaging cell membranes, proteins and DNA and causing microbial inactivation.

Dissipate

After treatment, the hydroxyl radicals dissipate into water and oxygen, leaving behind no residue.
